Quick N Easy Goan Fish Fry

Spread the love

Fish rava fry is a very popular dish in Goan cuisine. It is an essential part of the Goan fish thali.

The fish slices are coated with masala and dipped in a rava+rice flour coating and shallow fried. Rava coating gives it a crispy outside while keeping the inside very moist and juicy.

I have used Ravas (Indian Salmon) slices. Surmai or Kingfish slices also can be used instead of Ravas for this recipe.

It goes well with fish curry rice, pulav, or any other rice preperation. Also, this is my go to recipe for starters when I have guest over. Very quick to make, super easy and super tasty.

Ingredients:

  • Ravas 2 slices
  • Haldi/turmeric powder 2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 2 tsp
  • Salt 1 tsp or as per taste
  • Oil 2 tbsp or as per taste

For the rava coating:

  • Rice flour ¼ cup
  • Fine rava ¼ cup

Method:

How to make the rava coating mix:

Make the rava coating by mixing equal quantities of rice flour and fine rava. Store this in a container and take out the requires quantity in a bowl for coating the fish.

Wash the fish slices and remove excess water by pressing the slice between your palms. Sprinkle salt, haldi powder and chilli powder on both sides. Gently rub to spread the masala evenly.

Let it marinate for 10-15 mins(optionl)

Take some rice flour mix in a small bowl or plate and coat both the sides of the fish slices with it.

Heat oil in a pan/tava and shallow fry the fish slices till golden and crispy. Fish doesn’t take too much time to cook. When you release the fish slice in oil do not move it. Flip it after 3-4 mins and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes. Handle it gently else it will break.

Serve hot as an accompaniment to rice and curry or as a starter/appetizer.

Notes:

You can coat the fish slices with the masala and store it in the freezer and use as and when required.

Before frying thaw the fish and get it to room temperature, coat with rava mix and fry.

Do not fry while frozen as the fish will get tough and will not cook evenly.

Do not overcook the fish
