Easy Goan Prawn Curry with Drumsticks

Spread the love

Fish curry and rice is a lunch staple in most Goan households. Depending on the type of fish used the recipes slightly differ. My recipe for today is Prawns curry – saraswat style with drumsticks.

The catholic way of preparing this curry is different and used ginger and garlic whereas the saraswat style of preparation doesnt.

Fish curry rice is like comfort food for me. Something I grew up eating atleast 3 days a week. This is a very easy to make recipe for a weekday lunch. Do do try it out, I’m sure you will love it too.

Ingredients:

  • Prawns 10 medium sized
  • Onion half medium sized (finely chopped)
  • Drumstick 1 small sized
  • Oil- 1 tsp
  • Coconut oil- 1tsp (optionl)

For grinding to a fine paste

  • 1 cup grated fresh coconut
  • 1/2 tsp haldi powder
  • 1 tsp Red chilli powder
  • 1 dry whole red chilli
  • 12 black peppers
  • Tamarind- size of quarter of a lemon
  • Hing( asefotida)- a pinch
  • Rice flour- 2 tsps
  • Water for grinding 1/4 cup

Method:

Deshell, devein and wash the prawns. Marinate with a pinch of salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Keep aside.

Then clean the drumstick by scraping out the outer most fibers and cut in 2 inch length pieces.
Finely chop the onion.

Heat a little oil in a pan and add the finely cut onion. Saute for a minute and then add the drumstick pieces. Add half cup of water and cover and cook till the drumstick pieces are almost cooked.

While the drumstick is cooking, grind the ingredients mentioned above to a fine paste.

Check the drumstick by poking a fork through it, if its soft its cooked. Once cooked add the ground masala and cook on a low flame for 2-3 minutes.
Add the marinated prawns and salt to taste. Bring it to a gentle simmer by stirring occasionally.

Most important step is to taste the curry. Add more salt and red chilli powder if required. Once the curry comes to a simmer and the prawns are cooked, switch off the gas and pour a tsp of coconut oil over it and cover it.

Serve it with

Notes:

You can replace the drumstick with raddish if you like.

Take care not to boil the curry instead get it to a gentle simmer.

Served with hot with rice.
