This recipe is an easy and super quick one. Poha is a very popular breakfast dish as well as a wholesome snack. It is very popular in Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Gujrat.
Every one has their own favourite stlye of preperation. For this recipe I have used white poha. I have grownup eating red poha made from organic unpolished rice. I don’t find that type of poha here in Mumbai easily so I have used the white poha.
This recipe has many variations like kanda poha ( as the name suggests you have to add only onions and no other vegetables), or Batata poha ( add boiled potatoes). Addition of boiled corn or finely chopped bell peppers also tastes good. So this recipe can be easily tweaked to your liking. So whats stopping you? Just make it and enjoy!
Ingredients:
- Poha white (flattened rice) 2 cups
- Onions 2 medium sized
- Green peas boiled ¼ cup (optional)
- Roasted peanuts a handful
- Green chilli 1
- Curry leaves 7-8
- Mustard seeds ¼ tsp
- Coriander leaves 2 tbsp finely chopped
- Lemon half
- Salt 1 ½ tsp or as per taste
- Sugar ½ tsp
- Cumin ½ tsp
- Haldi (turmeric powder) ½ tsp
- Oil 2 tbsp
- Ghee 1 tbsp
Method:
Rinse the poha in a large strainer and leave it for 5 mins till the poha becomes soft. Check if its soft by pressing one flake between your fingers.
Heat 2 tbsps of oil in a pan/kadhai. When oil is hot, add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin, slit or chopped green chillies, curry leaves, haldi powder, roasted peanuts, finely chopped onions and sauté till the onions are translucent.
Add the boiled peas and cook for another couple of minutes. (I like to add green peas and onion in the poha but you can also add boiled potatoes or any other vegetable you like).
Now add the poha, salt, sugar and mix properly. Sprinkle some water on the poha (very little water else the poha will turn mushy) and cover and cook for 1-2 mins. Then add ghee and again cover and cook for another minute or so. Check for salt. Add sugar. Squeeze juice of half a lemon on it and garnish with with finely chopped coriander leaves. The poha is ready! Enjoy piping hot poha with hot chai. Top it with sev if you like.
Notes:
You can add 2-3 of any vegetable you like. Green peas, boiled potato, onion, boiled flower or finely chopped bell peppers go well with poha.
